Main Task: Music Magazines

Main Task. Research & Planning.

Main case study; Kerrang!
This prezi is an analysis of 3 different Kerrang front covers, contents page and double page spreads.  I also explore the ownership of Kerrang and the synergy and convergence it uses to generate a greater audience reach.

Their magazine heritage stretches back to 1953 with the launch of Angling Times and acquisition in 1956, of Motor Cycle News. In 1990, Bauer acquired London Dance Station FM, followed by Liverpool's Radio City & Melody FM.

In 1994, they bought a small magazine 'For Him' which is the core of best-selling international multi-platform FHM. Today, Bauer Media spans over 80 influential brand names covering a diverse range of interests. They produce a wide range of genres for magazines for many various demographics.

Impact of Digitisation.

73% of adults consume magazine brands across print and digital, 65% of adults read the print version and the other 28% of the adults consume magazines online. Marcus Rich, the chief Executive of Marie Clair Owner IPC Media said, 'Magazine chiefs urge industry change from burning platform to growth' meaning that industries must convert to a digital platform as well as print in order to stay successful and reach out to the new, modern audience due to the print industry being in decline. Converting to a digital platform will increase the popularity of the brand by 9.4%.

Mood Board.

I have decided to make a pop magazine, and here is the mood board which will aid me to create my magazine front cover.

I have gathered many images of celebrities which are very popular within the current music scene.  They are composed in some of the ways I wish to make my front cover artist pose.  I have also created the title of my magazine and the beginnings of the housestyle that I would like. I have also taken some primary images in the style of celebrities.  These I could potentially use to make my magazine look individual and realistic. The background I have made is using inks is the kind of style I wish to use on my actual front cover. I have chosen specific colours which are representative of the pop music industry so my target audience will know the magazine is based on pop music from their first glance. However, I have changed the colours so that my magazine creates a calm 'vibe' and it will not be too busy.

Flat Plan of Front Cover.

Here is my flat plan which I will use to guide me when actually making my front cover. This will aid me in making choices of what I would include and what my layout should be. I do not want my front cover to be busy as it will not attract and engage my target audience. That is the basic structure and layout which I want my front cover to use so it will look intriguing and my target audience will be interested in the big main image that will be slightly off centre using the rule of thirds.

I have thought about the way I want my magazine and the previous layout was not matching the style I wanted my magazine, therefore I changed it.

This is my new flat plan for my front cover. As you can see, it is a lot more simple and not so busy. There is only one image but it will cover the whole page and the image will look directly at the camera, so I will be using non verbal communication. This new design will make the reader more involved rather than just reading another magazine. It will feel more personal so the reader will feel that the artist is talking directly to them, more like a friend. I have added social media names and tags at the bottom because I realise that they are essential to the modern day society and its use od technology. The coverline will be big but will not cover the main image too much as it will be the main story in the magazine. I have also added a strapline showing other stories that I will include in the magazine, giving the reader inside knowledge about what is in the magazine before they purchase it.

Target Audience.

The target audience is those whom I as the institution chooses to target. Every single magazine is aimed towards a specific group otherwise the magazine will not work; it cannot attract everyone but can attract a particular group due to use of colour, images, language ect.

The audience as a whole is catergorised in many for example, by their gender, their age, the interests that the have, their location, where they live, their social classes, ethnicity, religion and finally their economical status and job.

Here, I analysed different front covers of magazines and identified and noted the various groups of readers that institutions are aiming their product at.

Here, I have went into more detail about what will catch the audiences eye.  I have noted this which will help me improve the design of the front cover that I intend to make.

Brand Identity.

There are many things that an institution needs to take into account when designing a product.  Most importantly are decisions concerning their brand, the brand's personality:

  • What is the brand?
  • Who is the brand?
  • What will the brand make the audience feel?
  • What are the benefits can the readers take away from reading the brand?
  • How does the brand appear?
They all fit into four categories; Brand image/identity. Brand Competence.

I have analysed the magazine 'Closer' to achieve a deeper understanding of their style and why people buy their magazine. Using this information, I will try to apply it to my magazine so I can improve the content but also the popularity.

This is a more in-depth analysis of the brand identity concerning what it says about the target audience of the magazine 'Closer'.

I have also analysed the magazine 'Heat' in the same amount of depth.

I then analysed my own magazine using this layout and analysed the brand identity of my magazine.

Audience Survey.

This will allow me to gain the relevant information for me to make my magazine as successful as possible.  I will use the data and answers and apply it to my front cover, contents page and double page spread.  The information that I will acquire will help me to construct my magazine by including and hopefully meeting the needs of my target audience.

Front Cover Main Image Ideas.

As my music magazine's genre is Pop and R&B, I want to try and make the main image as interesting and unique as it can be. I want to make the main story about a recent celebrity so the main image will be a mid shot or a full shot of a person. I will take primary pictures of me or others to make unique.

These images are what have inspired me for my main front cover image. These images are all of very famous celebrities, Bruno Mars, Drake and Justin Bieber. Two out of the three are looking directly into the camera as if they were looking out into the audience; this is what I want my magazine to involve, non-verbal communication. This method makes the reader feel included and thus a part of the magazine; they will feel a part of the celebrities life as if they were friends and thus a relationship will be created.

The first image gives creates an approachable and friendly feel, which allows the magazine be more welcoming. This feeling is one of the main aspects of my magazine which I believe would play a huge role in attracting my audience.
The third image illustrates the style and fashion of the magazine which I also want to feed into my magazine.

Front Cover.

Draft 2

Draft 3

I changed quite a lot from my first draft such as; the main image. I thought that the first image looked too happy and did not set the correct style for my magazine.

Final Draft.

Double Page Spread.

Stage 1.

At first I had to seek for a style that matches my front cover and one that would influence my decisions within designing and making my double page spread.

Stage 2.

This first draft shows the start of my double page spread layout. First of all, I had to choose a main image that would be outstanding on my page and that would stay with the theme of my front cover.

Stage 3.

At this point I chose a different image that would be another article on my double page spread. I started to filter the images and make everything combined and look fluent.

Stage 4.
Next, I had chosen a heading and found a font that I liked. I used the same font as the name of my magazine so it was still in the same theme.

Stage 5.

I chose a better font, that would match the style of my magazine and i made it bigger so it doesn't look uniform with the other text that will be on he page. I have also made my second image larger, more towards the corner and with no background so it is not so harsh on the readers eyes when they read through my double page spread.

Stage 6.

The next stage I made boxes where my article would be placed to show the outline of the content. I will place my article within the boundaries of the grey faded boxes so it will look uniform, but yet the boxes are not in order so it will show the style of my magazine.

Stage 7.

First of all, I've added the masthead of my magazine in he top left corner of each page and the month the magazine was released. I have also added younger images of myself to link with my front cover, The 50th year. The years the images were from are also there. This is the overall template for my double page spread.

Stage 8.

I have added the first part of my article, it is basically voyeuristic. Allowing the readers the have an insight of the celebrities

Stage 9.

Contents Page

Stage 1.

I wanted to keep the same style as my other pages, so a soft but bright background and expressive. I made the Masthead transparent so its not the main iconic thing about the page but you are still able to bee it clearly. I have placed an image there covering some of the 'V' to test what it would look like.

Stage 2.
